Thursday after work, we moved from Friday Harbor over to Bellingham, where we'll be hauled out at Seaview North for fixing several things we were hoping to have fixed over the winter -- leaking windows, new shaft seals, and some other fun stuff. Time for the annual heavy maintenance bill.

I watched the weather and buoys like a hawk Thursday during the work day, and started to see the Saturday afternoon window creeping closed. I made the call that we should depart a little after 7pm, well before we originally planned, to try to maximize chances we'd make it into the straight of Juan de Fuca before weather picked up. and the table to wedge our sleeping bodies into the couch corner to keep from rolling around while taking our sleep shifts. The winds did abate somewhat, but not until the early morning, and they then picked up more than predicted for basically the entire Friday -- hours of sustained 20 kts, but at least the wind shifted from off our port bow 180 degrees around to coming from our starboard stern, which switched us to a "surfing" posture instead of slamming into wind-blown waves head on, which was an improvement. We hit our predicted rounding of Cape Flattery into the straight right around midnight Friday night, and given the predicted winds picking up Saturday morning, I made the call to just keep going instead of stopping at Neah Bay. I wanted to just be done with this journey, and a pause could have kept us locked up in Neah Bay for many more days before the next weather break in the straight. It turned out to be the right call -- a few miles into the straight, all wind disappeared, and we basically cruised the rest of the night in rapidly calming conditions, with daybreak to lovely glassy conditions as we cleared Victoria, BC on our way to the San Juans. We pulled into Friday Harbor at around 9:30am Saturday -- after 38 hours underway, our longest continuous journey by quite a bit, with two full overnights -- greeted by Keith and Rebecca, who had boated over on Friday to hang out for the weekend. We were both pretty zombielike at this point. The first night of very rocky seas did not get us much sleep credit, and 2-person alternating shifts means you build sleep debt pretty quickly, so brunch with coffee was had before relaxing on the boat for the afternoon. We now start following up with the boatyards we've been talking to to schedule a haulout and work -- we need to get a fair bit of work done on the boat this season, that we were hoping to get done over the winter, but couldn't get the boat up to a boatyard until now.

Newport, OR Day Out

We ended up leaving at about 9:30pm to time getting into Newport before dark the next day, and the plan worked quite well, really. Except the part where Hannah got pretty hopelessly seasick pretty early on the trip and spent much of the 20 hour journey periodically booting off the side of the boat. The moon was almost full and up from midnight to sunrise, so visibility was excellent via the night vision camera. We took 2 hour shifts and got through the night. but very manageable, and smoothed out over the journey. We managed to trade off driving and working well (might have contributed to Hannah's seasickness) and got through the day, then upon arrival both promptly passed out at 9pm and slept through the night. Now we hang out here and possibly do an even longer journey Thursday night through Saturday afternoon to get into the Straight of Juan de Fuca if the weather window holds and all goes well.
Brookings, OR ‐ May 3

We finished out the week in Crescent City uneventfully -- got last packages Friday, made some more small repairs, and watched the weather. Hannah met someone at the aerial class she took locally who invited us to go for a short jaunt around the Redwoods saturday morning, so we took her up on that and had a fun morning wandering around the Redwoods that I haven't seen for like 30 years. We decided to risk the weather today to get up to Brookings, where we could fill up with the cheapest diesel [...]
until Oak Harbor, and stage for the next, larger, run up to Coos Bay. The weather turned out to not be all that bad, and we made the uneventful journey in 2 and a half hours and set up on the transient dock at Brookings. We'll grab diesel in the morning when they open, and we're hoping that the weather holds to make Tuesday a good transit day to get up to Coos Bay, then hopefully get hauled out Wednesday and get the shaft seals changed. After that, weather isn't looking good, so we might still be stuck in Coos Bay for a while, TBD.

Crescent City, CA ‐ Apr 29

We've been here for over a week now, so we're basically locals. The Pacific has been rotating one storm after another, so it's been basically impassible. We've been taking advantage of the downtime to get a bunch of projects done on the boat. Between the captains doing questionable things, the usual amount of broken stuff from 6 months of disuse, and having been transported from FL to San Diego on a cargo ship, this year's given us a bunch of unexpected failures, so we've been busy. t time Hannah went to use the convection microwave to bake this year, it errored out and apparently had thoroughly broken over the winter. We'd already replaced it once in 2022, so it's annoying that it broke this early, but reviews have been pretty terrible for that Microwave since then, so we switched to a new brand, ZLine, which was better-reviewed and almost half the price of the Bosch we had before. We ordered it from Home Depot to be delivered to the store, and it required scooting to HD to pick it up, then grabbing the one Uber in town that fortunately happened to be a just-barely-big-enough vehicle to take the Microwave back to the marina. All the measuring paid off and it just barely fit in the slot from the old microwave. The port motor has been leaking oil heading north up the coast, which I'd managed to narrow down to likely being the main seal. Unfortunately, our motors are renowned for having crank pulleys that get essentially seized to the crankshaft, with multiple posts describing trials and tribulations that ended in people making a custom plate to support a hydraulic ram pushing against the crank. It seemed insane, but the preponderance of posts made me think it was the right answer, so I'd preemptively ordered a few hydraulic parts and a steel plate to Hannah's brother's house. I briefly tried to use a standard pulley puller tool, which promptly snapped a 2 inch chunk out of the pulley (fortunately, not a part that mattered), and then promptly built the plate. Amazingly, I'd bought a drill guide last year on a whim, and it came in clutch for drilling six 3/8" holes through a 3/4" steel plate. I used the hydraulic setup I had pre-ordered, and .... no dice. Full strength, didn't budge. I ran down to Harbor Freight and bought another ram just before they closed, loaded it all up on the engine, and promptly yeeted the crank pulley directly onto my left big toe. Cue late night trip directly to the ER. Amazingly, not broken, but since it was the same toe that I dropped a steel plate on 15 years ago building the SSM Miata, we'll see if it ever grows a toenail again, since this one is shrapnel... The other big project has been fixing the generator, which had been losing coolant. It was exhibiting all the characteristics of a blown head gasket, but I managed to find someone on a Northern Lights Facebook group who said that it's not a head gasket -- it's an exhaust obstruction that ends up pushing coolant past a boot and into the cooling system. After digging through stuff, I found that the exhaust hose had delaminated inside, largely blocking itself. So we ordered a bunch of new wet exhaust hose and some refresh parts for the generator and replaced everything, and now the generator doesn't kick coolant out the overflow anymore. Phew. Bunch of other random projects. One of the mirrors in the guest bathroom decided to detach itself from the wall and not break. The TV had several dead horizontal pixel lines, which we suspect is from the captains dropping it onto something (it's on a hinged panel that if you're not paying attention can drop the TV right onto whatever's on the kitchen floor), so we replaced that (fortunately, great 43" TVs are only 200$ now). One of the holding tank sensors melted itself apart over the winter, which is a little scary, so I ended up ordering a Tank GX 140 to move the holding tank sensors to and stop using the Yacht Devices sensors, which required running long wires around half the boat to get to the GX. We have a dying shaft seal on the starboard side that started leaking on the way up to Crescent City, so we have parts in hand now and we're trying to find a haulout before heading too far up the coast -- likely in Coos Bay. Lots of stuff breaking this year, which is quite annoying and expensive, but c'est la vie. The weather keeps not looking great. At this point, we're hoping to possibly bump up to Brookings, OR this coming weekend (only ~20 miles away) to fill up on fuel and stage for heading up to Coos Bay mid-week to get hauled out for the shaft seal replacement. Next weekend, if the current forecast holds, we might do an overnight all the way up to the strait of Juan de Fuca to get the heck off the Pacific...

When the sun came up, the wind had already picked up and was ~17kts from directly behind us. Since it was a full flip of direction, the waves had taken a while to catch up, but by 7am they were already fairly large and we were surfing our way forward. As soon as we could see, we jumped up to planing speed (~14 kts against the current) and tried to get to Crescent City as fast as we could. Fortunately, by then, we'd gotten mostly in the lee from the winds coming from the shore, so the seas were pretty calm, and we went back to hull speed for the last hour and a half into Crescent City. We got to our dock spot, spent some time cleaning up and assessing, then wandered over to a local brewery for tasty beer and good food. The rest of the afternoon was spent doing a bunch of boat projects, taking more stock of other things that apparently had broken over the winter (the convection microwave, the TV, the grill starter, the port holding tank sensor, sparkling water machine, and the generator is showing some oil in the coolant) and starting to order parts...
CA Coast Overnight ‐ Apr 18

After a long winter of watching for weather windows to bring the boat north and finding none longer than a couple days at most, we finally set a drop dead date of April 15th, after our friends' wedding, we'll head out to the boat and just live aboard and move north a day at a time as windows arrive. We got under way at 8am with several backup plans set up, but the conditions weren't all that bad, so we decided to take advantage of the weather and go for the overnight, aiming all the way for Crescent City. We called them up and made a reservation for Sunday, then settled in and headed north. As the sun went down, the moon shortly followed -- 10pm moonset means no light at all for the low-light nightvision camera to pick up, so visibility was near zero, especially after the fog rolled in. So we settled in for a long night of sleeping shifts, watching what little we could see on the night vision camera and radar like hawks.

We set off at 4am, a couple hours before first light, to give us plenty of time to get into SF in the early afternoon Tuesday, or lots of room to deal with issues in case we had an issue somewhere on the trip. Just out of Santa Barbara, we passed through a crab/lobster/? pot field that we only saw on the nightwave and carefully picked our way through entirely via its video. After that, things remained uneventful. We rounded Point Conception, where we got the worst of the ocean conditions as the currents collided around the point, then settled in for what was mostly just medium swells with some miscellaneous chop along the way. Matthew's joining us was amazingly helpful. Going from 2 to 3 shifts meant everyone could actually get a decent amount of sleep and not be completely wrecked the next day. We puttered through the day and settled in for that long overnight, took our shifts, and eventually made our way into San Francisco Bay. As always in SF, it was fairly foggy on the way in, but literally as we passed under the bridge, the skies cleared up and we were met with mostly blue skies as we pulled into the Sausalito YC. We got on a mooring there, cleaned up, and Matthew headed back to his place in San Jose. Weather is setting in tomorrow afternoon, so we are flying back to Key West for the moment, and will watch for a weather window to fly back out and finish the job...

We left just after dawn this morning for a long slow day to Long Beach, testing out the swim step's repairs and the boat in general. As we got closer to long beach, we were buzzed by some jets and clearly were coming near an air show, and got to watch the show for an hour before it finished up and dozens of boats all booked it for marinas at the same time, turning the sea into a complete mess. We arrived to the Long Beach Yacht Club, where we got reciprocal moorage, around 5pm, ran to Trader Joe's for provisions (the boat was basically empty), and had a lovely dinner at the yacht club. Matthew flew down to join us for the upcoming voyage, arriving just before we all went to sleep. Tomorrow, we shall depart before dawn to, ideally, make it to Santa Barbara, positioning us for a long overnight Monday night to get to the bay area by end of day Tuesday...

We still had to get our car from Fort Pierce, and had been planning on figuring out some combination of a long uber ride and trains to go fetch it. Our friends Timur and Michelle have been staying in Fort Lauderdale for the last week and had offered us their car to go grab it when we thought it'd be next week. But we told them it was this weekend now, and instead Michelle's mom offered us her car to borrow! So we jaunted up to Fort Pierce in a new F-Pace, which was a fun toy, grabbed the Kia, [...]
and caravanned back to Fort Lauderdale. I'd contacted a referral of a captain from San Diego last night, and today we talked and said he (and his brother) were available to run the boat up the coast for us when it arrives out west. So I spent a lot of the afternoon writing up a picture guidebook for our boat, with operating nuances, maintenance instructions, emergency stuff, etc. for them to follow when they take our boat up to the northwest in a few weeks. The Fort Lauderdale port is unfortunately backed up, with nowhere to bring in another cargo ship, so our ship is parked just outside the port waiting for landing tomorrow and loading boats Tuesday. So with luck, we load up Tuesday and head back to Key West in the evening, and the adventure back to boating in the northwest is finally officially under way... Just costing more money and with far more risk than the original plan...

2 days has passed of Allied Yacht Transport not returning any calls or emails. I've talked with the lawyer a few times, and he gave me some suggested things to ask them to try to mediate where we are, so I sent various types of nicer and less-nice emails to AYT since Wednesday, all to no response. No phone calls, no answering the phone from any number, and I even tried calling from Hannah's phone. They've just holed up or something. So, we have to conclude at this point that they've actually [...]
been scamming me all along and are currently in possession of our large deposit for this shipment, which will be a joyous legal process to liberate them of. This afternoon, I called around and found that SevenStar, a well-known real transport company, actually had a transport ship arriving this coming weekend to Fort Lauderdale, though it would only go as far as Ensenada (in Mexico right across the border from LA), so we'd still need to get the boat up to the northwest some other way. Also today, the tropical storm in the central Atlantic intensified and predictions jumped up to 90% formation risk and looking like a fairly major hurricane, with spaghetti models running it straight up central or eastern Florida, so nowhere for us to run. Our boat insurance for the east coast runs out on September 15th, after already having extended it 3 times, and when you renew insurance, any current systems are excluded, so you can't get insurance right before a storm (makes sense). So we're hosed for this storm. We made the call to entirely bail on any hope with Allied Yacht Transport and we'll resume dealing with them in court, and jumped over to pay SevenStar for the imminent shipment. So in the morning, we bomb down to Fort Lauderdale and hope all goes well, now that we have even more money on the line to hopefully get back to the west coast...

We woke up to our usual delay email from Allied Yacht Transport, but this one was a little different -- for the last 2 months they've been moving it out ~3 days per week, but this time it moved it out 2 full weeks, to late September. At this point, it's clear that they have no idea. I called them, the wife picks up, and I ask "what's going on?" "Oh, just more delays." I don't accept that this time. I get right to the point, since the last time I asked them for info on the boat they brushed [...]
me off. "Where is the boat"? "I don't know exactly". "Within 1000 miles, where is the boat?" "I don't know." "Is there even a boat?" "You're going to have to speak to my husband, call him." So I call Vadim, he doesn't pick up, but says he'll call me back right after he gets off the phone. An hour passes, I call back, no answer. I spend the rest of the day calling both of them every 30 minutes but it usually goes straight to voicemail. So I've been blocked, neat. I dig around and find a marine contract lawyer who operates in the Florida county that our contract says we must go to court in, and explain the situation. Turns out this guy has sued Vadim before for another customer for similar shenanigans, back when he was with United Yacht Transport, and it bankrupted that transport company. He asks me to send over the contract to look at, but basically points out that if they had no ability to perform the contract as of the original dates when it was signed, the contract was executed in bad faith by them. At 4pm they send an email that says, basically, "You've been assigned a boat! The departure window is October 5-15". I reply to the email asking for some sort of documentation confirming their relationship with this vessel so I can have some faith in this process. Nothing. I keep calling every 30-60 minutes until 9pm when I give up.

We've been having issues with our watermaker since soon after we bought it, and the last time I had someone try to fix it, they came as we commissioned it for the season and it worked great, so they didn't have anything to fix, then got crappy again a few weeks later. new stuff to try out and debug, but also let me know that he was putting on a watermaker course coming up the coming weekend (this was back on Tuesday this week) down in Fort Lauderdale. The course is basically everyone bringing their watermaker and you spend a few days tearing it down to raw parts, checking everything, cleaning, and reassembling, debugging and learning along the way. 3 days seemed like kinda a lot, but I was getting near my wits end with the 15k$ watermaker and this seemed like a good way to get a thorough understanding of one of the last "black box" systems on our boat. So I went down and took the course. JT knows his shit through and through, and has learned a bunch about especially the Spectra watermakers over the years. I dismantled and cleaned ours, and we found a bunch of obvious red flags inside that all pointed to the same basic issues -- incorrectly timed fresh water flush, which he says is basically true of nearly all Spectra watermakers from the factory. So 3 days later, I have basically a brand new watermaker, I understand a ton more about how it works, I know how to repair basically anything on it, and I'm certified to do Spectra field repairs on their behalf if I so desire, which is a neat little side benefit after AI takes my day job in a few years.

try again on Friday morning down here in Fort Pierce when he's hopefully better again. On the bright side, it meant we could get out of dodge at a reasonable hour and head south with lots of time to spare. The ocean conditions were nearly perfect, so we just hopped outside at the Cape Canaveral inlet and headed in a straight line to the Fort Pierce inlet, trading off working from the helm all afternoon. The marina we're staying in is mostly an active fisherman marina, right at the base of a new bridge being built over the ICW, so we'll see how noisy the construction is tomorrow. We're planning on staying here for roughly a month (got a good monthly rate) while we wait for the transport ship to arrive in Port Everglades, then we'll hop down there to get loaded up when we get a final destination day. In the interim, we'll go pick the car up from DC and drive it down, and I'm going to take a watermaker maintenance/troubleshooting/rebuild course next weekend down in Ft Lauderdale, so I can take some of the mystere out of probably the very last "black box" system on the boat that I only know some more-or-less-basic stuff about. We've had a nice and relatively chill week in Cape Canaveral. There's not a _lot_ going on here, though, so it's probably not somewhere we need to go out of our way to return to. The marina has been good and easy to receive packages at, which is always a bonus. n. Friday we took advantage of everyone off grilling and partying and went to Kennedy Space Center, seeing all the fun stuff there on a sparsely-attended day (perfect). Saturday we went down to Cocoa Beach to eat a bunch of food, do an escape room, see Bethy's folks for a bit, and attend the drone show that night. We haven't seen a drone show before, but it's definitely pretty neat. This one was fairly amateur compared to most of the stuff I've seen online but it was still pretty great to see the complex shapes take form in 3D, and makes me want to see more drone shows. Sunday we got brunch and they headed back up to Orlando, and I spent the day finishing up a bunch of boat projects, getting ready for ... A survey! We need to sort out updated insurance for both the next month in storm season as well as when we head to the west coast, and it's been almost 5 years since we bought the boat so insurance is requiring us to get an updated survey. I found a local guy who had availability tomorrow, so we're gonna spend several hours tomorrow having the boat poked and prodded, getting hauled out and checked out, so that we can get an updated report to send to insurers. After that, if all goes well, we'll head offshore down to Ft. Pierce, where we have a month reserved at a marina there, and we'll just be staged to head down to Fort Lauderdale on a couple days' notice when it looks like the transport ship is going to be ready to board. It's just much much much cheaper to stage further north than down in the Miami area...

e working. Our next hop is Cape Canaveral, where we have a marina reservation through the holiday weekend. Knowing that the ICW would be slow-going today, if we wanted to make it all the way here, we knew we'd have to wake up at dawn and get on plane (go fast) any chance we had. So, we did, every opportunity all day, picked up 560 gallons of diesel half way here, and eventually got into our destination just after 7pm pretty tired of dodging thundercells. We'll hang out here for a week, where I have an enormous Amazon and mail-forwarding order arriving throughout the next few days. Bethy/Alex will hop over from Orlando to visit for the holiday weekend and we'll go do a lap of Kennedy Space Center, then we'll continue south. For those keeping track, we still don't have a final shipping date yet -- it's currently "after the 15th" with no further details, which is making it a little hard for us to do much planning. Hopefully, by the time we leave here next Monday (July 7th), we'll have a lot more knowledge, and can more intelligently plan how/when to arrive in Port Everglades. But in the meantime, trying out a new tourist area, and then hanging out for a holiday weekend!

After finishing the repairs, our week in St. Augustine was fun. It's actually somewhat similar to Key West, and even has several of the same tour companies doing the same tour activities -- there's a Fury boat doing midnight cruises around the bay every night and there's Old Town Trolley and fake train driving hop-on-and-off tours. The tourist area bustles with walkers, with a combo of cheap tourist paraphernalia and high end clothing shops. There's a million restaurants and more ice cream sh [...]
ops than you've ever seen in a 3 block radius before. Also similar to Key West, while there's lots of live music, there's actually not much in the way of shows/attractions. But we had a great time. We wandered around several evenings, had lots of good meals and cocktails at several different places. Hannah found some clothes and jewelry she likes. On Saturday, we went alcohol tasting at St Augustine Distillery, which had been one of our favorites in the past and did not disappoint this time. They gave us a 10% off card to their sister distillery across town, so we went over there and bought even more stuff. We then carried a stack of liquor back to the dinghy, dinghied to the boat, changed into dinner attire, and got back to downtown minutes before the sky opened up with the predicted rain. Our evening show was a random magic show that I'd found on google maps, with an astonishingly good rating set (4.9 with like a thousand reviews). So we got some early drinks and appies at the bar while it poured outside, then went to see the show. It turned out to be a very intimate show with only around ~20 people in the room, and everyone was involved in some way. It was some of the most impressive mentalism and slight of hand that I've ever seen in person, and everyone being feet away from him made it all the more impressive. If you somehow find yourself in St. Augustine, go see the Magic Hideaway show. It was a bit pricey, but worth it. We leave St. Augustine knowing that it might be our last time ever hanging out here, but having hit the town pretty hard this week felt like a good sendoff. We then fell asleep on the boat at like 10pm.
St. Augustine Repairs ‐ Jun 23, 2025

Late last night I used the polisher to pump every last drop that it could reach out of the starboard tank into the port tank, just to hopefully catch any debris in the larger hoses of the polisher. Then I cleverly had to re-prime the polisher since I'd run the tank completely dry before I could send fuel back to the starboard tank. Live and learn. I spent the afternoon and evening today installing all the new replacement parts. I had to fabricate up an upper bracket for the new enormous filt [...]
er setup since its mount didn't fit on the wall plate that Endeavour had built into the wall anymore. After a few hours of fabbing and mounting, the new setup was in place. I eventually managed to jerry-rig our fuel polisher to let me polish fuel THROUGH the new setup to get any debris from the new hose lines out of it before setting it loose on the engine. After a bunch of overworking the poor polisher sucking fuel through an entire fuel system plus its normal long lines, I cracked the injectors loose, Hannah cranked for a bit, and we eventually got fuel to the injectors. Tightened everything up and it fired right up and ran! However, at this point it was just after 11pm, so we shut things down for the night and will do more extensive testing in the morning. But at least it looks like, so far, we're off to a good start. I'm still nervous about the possibility of junk in the tank, but we don't have a lot of choice other than waiting to see if the problem magically re-surfaces on the brand new racor setup, at which point we'll have to take some drastic action (like literally cutting a hole in the side of the tank and having to re-weld it back together) to clean any debris out...

Through much of the day, the journey continued to be uneventful, and the seas calmed down again. However, as we were about 4 hours out from St. Augustine, suddenly the starboard motor sputtered and died. I went down to debug and found the Racor only half full, so my best guess was that as the tanks dropped lower they sloshed over a wave and picked up some air. It took hours to get the engine restarted -- air was everywhere, I just couldn't get any fuel out of the injector lines for ages. Thi [...]
s was weird, as I've had air in the lines before and not had anything like this hard of a time getting it restarted. After 3 hours of sweating in the 110 F engine bay and getting it restarted, we resumed at normal speed and I went to take a shower to get the diesel off. Just as the shower was ending, I heard the motor sputter again. This time, the seas were nearly flat, so I knew that it wasn't picking up air. I aborted the shower and headed back into the engine bay, and noticed that the vacuum sensor on the racor's peak-and-hold needle was actually wrapped all the way through to the vacuum side. The only way this happens is if there's a blockage in the system, unfortunately. To add insult to injury, the intense vacuum of the blockage had sucked the seal out of the water drain at the bottom, so fuel was draining from the Racor with no way to solve it. I was planning on changing this racor out for a newer dual-filter unit, so it wasn't worth trying to rescue this one. We were only 40 mins or so out from St. Augustine at this point on one engine, and there wasn't any real progress I was going to make in that time, so I just tried to contain the diesel as best as I could, pouring it all into a zip lock baggie. Knowing that the situation was going to be spicy with the current that always rips through St Augustine, we hailed the marina folks and said we were on one engine, can they put us on a mooring as far away from other boats as possible. As suspected, I wasn't able to really get the boat turned around and we ended up picking up the mooring from the side of the boat and letting the mooring turn us around into the current. We also got bad news from the shipper that the July 2-4 shipment we were heading for had actually filled up the last spot on Thursday (what the fuck, guy? you told us to wait before committing because we had time). So now we know we have 3-4 weeks to slowly work our way down to Fort Lauderdale. We promptly went into town, giving the dinghy its first trial of the season, where it worked like a champ, and got a lovely dinner at Forgotten Tonic before returning to the boat. Knowing that we didn't have to hurry anymore meant we could chill out and take some time to fix everything. So I spent the rest of the evening tearing out the old Racor, cleaning up the bilge pump lines that I'd been meaning to fix up for ages, and getting the area ready to install new stuff tomorrow. And now we go to bed.

Offshore Overnight Day 1 ‐ Jun 21, 2025

We woke up before first light, since we were anchored an easy drive off of a fairly major shipping lane (Cape Fear), so it was easy to navigate by instruments only. The sun rose as we broke out into open ocean and headed SSW toward St. Augustine. Basic routing suggested that if we averaged 8 kts we'd get into St. Augustine well before sunset the next day, so we could always speed up for a few hours if the gulf stream currents were against us. The ocean was "fine" -- a little rolly with some mixed chop, but definitely not bad as our ocean crossings have gone, but it made sleeping a hair difficult. We traded off stints, starting from when we left, and all in all it was a pretty uneventful day. As night fell, we settled into 2-3 hours per stint and used the Nightwave night vision camera that I got at the end of last season, to pretty good effect. It was, of course, an essentially new moon, so there was no light outside the boat other than stars and the occasional container ship.

Despite 11 calls to humans to FedEx this week (and several more that didn't make it that far), they didn't get the Lithuania injectors delivered until around noon today. The delayed UPS "overnight" shipment to the injector rebuilders also came in this morning. So after my morning meetings, I took an Uber driver on a tour of southeastern North Carolina as we went to Whole Foods in Wilmington to return an amazon purchase from last week, picked up injectors, and brought me back to where we starte [...]
d. But everything was done! We won't talk about how much money I've spent on Yanmar injectors this week. After that, I had some afternoon meetings and was able to get going on installing the injectors around 4:30pm. By the time I finished cleaning gunk out of the injector holes and reinstalling everything, it was just after 6pm, but we headed out anyway, to get close to Cape Fear and do a quick shakedown of the boat. As we suspected, the starboard engine is now behaving better than it ever has before! It looks like Stingray Point used the wrong tip gaskets 4 years ago when they rebuilt things in Deltaville, and then future mechanics working on it didn't bother to change or even check the part numbers on the gaskets for their work on it. So a series of incompetent people have done work on them over the years, and now we finally have the proper factory gaskets in there, moving the injector down ~2mm into the chamber. And now that motor, despite the boat being nearly at full load (75% fuel, 100% water, 40% holding tanks) was only 25 rpms off rated RPMs (used to be 100-125 at this load). Now I get to check the port engine's injectors after we get the boat shipped to the northwest, since they probably have the same wrong gaskets on them... We wandered down to Tina's Pocket, an awkward but fairly-protected anchorage a few miles north of Cape Fear. We tested out full throttle and other throttle positions along the way, and everything seems lovely. Better yet, fuel usage on that engine is down below where it was when we started this season (before the injector crapped out), so hooray! If you want something done right, do it yourself... Tomorrow we're going to head out into the ocean before first light and do an overnight passage to skip all of South Carolina and Georgia, ideally putting in at St. Augustine as the sun goes down Sunday night, putting us back to ahead of schedule and giving us over a week to tootle the last 250nm down to Fort Lauderdale.

We woke up early to call around, but the calls didn't take too long. The super-local guy didn't do diesel injectors, as expected, but the other folks with the 24hr emergency call # that I'd texted had responded at 2am while we were sleeping. We checked with the Carolina Beach Municipal Marina harbormaster and he said he had room for ~a week or more on the docks, so come on in. r tips. I bagged them ready to drop off on Monday morning. I then tried to pull the busted dinghy helm (steering) head off and found the steering wheel completely frozen to it. I scooted down to True Value and then Ace Hardware trying to find a bearing/steering puller, and found a really crappy one at Ace. I tried it and quickly bent it into a pile of useless metal -- into the trash. I threw the injector baggie into a backpack and ubered up to the Harbor Freight in Wilmington, ~15 miles away, and on the way the injector guy said we can drop them off while I was up there. So I bought a claw puller kit and a bunch of other stuff (it's HF, how can I resist?), dropped off the injectors, and headed back to the boat. 30 seconds after using the proper claw puller, off the steering wheel pops. The helm comes out minutes later, and as expected, has a big crack down the side -- hosed. Throughout the day, I emailed with the Lithuania peeps, and they're happy to upgrade to international priority shipping on my dime and get it out Monday morning. I checked with the Harbormaster and he happily offered mailing to his house to get packages, so I passed the address on to the Lithuanian fellows and made an order for replacement dinghy helm parts from Hodges to the same address. So, it's possible that by end of Wednesday, we'll have new injectors and seals from Lithuania installed on the engine, new dinghy parts to get that going again, and be well down the process of getting our injectors rebuilt by the local folks. But I like having two irons in the fire -- more likely one of them actually works out in the end. For now, we're really enjoying Carolina Beach. It's a nice chill beach town with a fun little boardwalk area with a bunch of eateries and a little carnival center, and a pretty beach. So as places to get stuck go, this is pretty great. In the meantime, we're spending our new-found spare time finishing up the last projects for the season that we hadn't had time for yet, much to Hannah's dismay. But now we have working dual bilge pumps in each engine bay, powered by a switch between house and start power, an upgraded chain grabber for the bridle (Mantus v3), a bunch of reworked storage organization and electrical routing/safety, a removed Vesper Cortex and new class B AIS + dedicated VHF, and a bunch of other misc fun things. Idle hands, devil playthings, something something. Now we have 2 days of waiting and then probably a frantic Wednesday, in the best scenario turning into a buzzer-to-buzzer Thursday (Juneteenth holiday for David) cruise. Another fun day of dodging storms and the boring ICW, but at least weather was predicted to suck today so we went in eyes wide open. Most of the day was raining, with intermittent heavy rain/wind as arms went overhead. Some lightning, but we mostly managed to time avoiding the worst cells. We eventually called it a little early (before sunset) and are spending the night on a mooring in Carolina Beach, because the 2 hours after we stopped were predicted to have massive unavoidable storm cells [...]
pass through the whole area, and we were kinda tired of being scared of lightning less than a mile away. Unfortunately, this evening, as I checked the starboard engine (the one that's been exhibiting the injection issues) oil level, it's actually raised, and showing hints of little bubbles on the dipstick. This is unfortunately characteristic of when a diesel injector is sticking and leaking bad enough that diesel is going past the rings and getting into the engine oil. Of course, it's a saturday night, so we're not really going to be able to do much until Monday. So we're going to limp along tomorrow on one engine to see how far south we can get, and early Monday morning start calling everyone around to see where to overnight our current injectors to. Late Friday evening, I found a vaguely-affordable set of injectors for our annoyingly-rare engine from a diesel shop in Lithuania (on ebay) and purchased them. The sellers have already gotten back to my request for international overnight and said that on Monday morning early they'll see what's possible...

We picked up ~450 gallons of diesel just north of Beaufort, NC and then tucked into a marina in Morehead City just after dark. As tends to keep happening with us, we hit this city for the annual sport fishing competition, so nearly everywhere was full but we did find one affordable marina with one last slip for us. But it's hilariously full of sport fishers. We'll enjoy unlimited power to try to get some of the water out of the air -- it's amazingly humid right now. We have a weekend ahead of us to make as much mileage as we can. We are making really good distance headed south, and I asked the shipper if they actually had an earlier ship, and it turns out they do -- if we can get down for July 2-4-ish, we can actually get on an earlier transport. So, all the more reason to push at this point -- will really simplify our summer and give us a lot more time in the northwest before the rains come. So south we go...

We went through the whole canal and set up on anchor on the far side in the Pungo river just as the sun set. But hey, we're alive. And saw our first tornado...

We had an awkward/funny issue when we were crossing the bridge nearby the dinghies, headed to lunch, when we noticed the dinghies both hanging in the air by their lines. Oh, right -- tides are a thing, even on "rivers". Oops. We'll figure all this stuff out someday... Fun day in the city though -- we'd definitely come back at a later time. It's big enough that there's plenty of food/drink/activities, but small enough that it's easy to get around, even with scooters. We also pumped out and filled up with water on the dock of the Edgewood Yacht Club, where we were staying. Our watermaker is on the fritz, so every run is questionable as to whether it'll crap out. We're headed to New Bedford this week to get it serviced, since it requires some proprietary scanner tools, of course...

We got a late lunch, then decided to do an impromptu escape room, which we promptly destroyed their time record on, and then went and got beer at the Rejects brewery. We usually stay at the museum dock, but it's expensive, and we wanted to spend a few days here, so we ended up finding the Mason Island Yacht Club with affordable moorings, and a short 2 mile scooter ride into town. They turned out to be a great little club to stay with and we'll definitely come back. We scooted to north of downtown to go to a escape room place, which ended up going from several availabilities to totally full in the 20 minute scooter ride, so we moved on to a brewery nearby that had a bunch of great beers on tap. We rounded out the evening going into downtown and eating at an italian place that was quite tasty. After heading back to the boats for the evening, I tried to start chopping up a 5/16" thick stainless steel plate and dulled a bunch of my drill bits and cutting blades before giving up for the night, so that was fun. After chilling for a bit, we dinghied down to the shore in front of the castle, where we left the dinghy on a bungee anchor and hiked up the hill to the castle. Upon arrival, we found out that unfortunately reservations are required and all tours had sold out for the day. We took some cool pictures and then wandered back to the dinghy and returned to the raft. We chilled for the afternoon on a gorgeous day, ate dinner outside in our cockpit, and eventually dressed up to dinghy over to the opera house to watch South Pacific. The play turned out to have an excellent cast, great (tiny) orchestra, and the opera house was full of old-time character and was a pretty intimate theater. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the experience greatly exceeded expectations for all. Thus concludes our CT River tour -- in the morning we head back out and then east to New London.

After getting on and off temperature warnings from the boat's battery compartment for the last month, it looked like the cold snap this week was going to be a major issue, so I grabbed a last-minute plane ticket and headed up to Baltimore to try to install some new heaters. I, of course, arrive in the middle of a snowstorm -- the marina's frozen over and there's 4-6 inches of snow on the ground. I quickly learn that the heaters I bought didn't come with the required specific type of double-sid [...]
ed adhesive on them, so I ordered it from Amazon with same-day delivery, and then was lied to for 6 hours straight by Amazon reps who said it was out for delivery and almost there, and then at 10pm told me that, in fact, it hadn't shipped yet. In the end, I think I found out that the real problem was actually a bad temperature sensor in the battery bay, so I put a more-calibrated one in place (that I can remote monitor), and disabled the low-temperature cutout on the Victron equipment. So I'll monitor it by hand for the rest of the winter, and see if I need to come back up for round 2.

It smoothed out in the evening as we pulled into Oswego, but the day definitely polished our holding tanks, shaking them up for 6 hours straight. We went through the first lock (O-8) to get off the weather-affected water, and parked for the week at the free wall just south of the lock. We're aiming to get to Ess-Kay to get some work done on the boat starting the following Monday, so we have some time to chill, now that we've made it across the lake. We woke up to a dreary-looking day, got some pastries from a local bakery, and departed, locking up out of Smiths Falls. This next segment was what we would ordinarily consider very tight/windy/narrow, but the lock before us was the Kawartha Voyageur, an 110 ft long 30 ft wide cruise boat bespoke to just barely fit inside these locks, so we had to hold our pride. After returning from Perth, I found that the alternator power cable end was starting to melt and spent the rest of the evening (and morning) rebuilding and improving that whole system, which was definitely how I wanted to spend the evening.

Unfortunately, Inquest lost a starter motor in the second lock and needed help getting onto the wall at the top, where we then tore down the starter and found it to be totally toast. Russ will sort out a repair/replacement in the morning, and we went to a nice dinner in town where we scared away some other patrons by being too boisterous.

Montreal Aviation Museum

Started the day with Russ and I scooting/biking over to check out the Montreal Aviation Museum, which turned out to be a great little local museum full of restored old planes that were clearly labors of love. It was very focused on the early era of aviation, which I actually knew very little about, so it was quite interesting, with a special exhibit on women in early aviation plus Canada's efforts in the beginning of the aviation race. Great way to spend 90 minutes.
