To stage to get as close as possible to the NJ coast, today we came down the East River and grabbed a mooring at the Miramar YC on the north side of Coney Island. From here it's just a few miles out to Sandy Hook and our super-fun journey tomorrow.

In the center of coastal CT is a small set of rocky islands just off shore called "The Thimbles". They're all full of houses, one per island for the most part, and cut off from the mainland. We find it a useful stopping point between NY/western CT and RI and have anchored here many times. With winds forecast to be from the SE, our anchor spot between two "strakes" of the islands should be nicely protected for the next day. It helps that it's a nice pretty spot as well.

Inquest had figured out that it was dinghy-navigable all the way up to a park right next to downtown, which seemed far more fun than scooting the several miles back and forth, so we opted for that approach. a couple breweries, got awesome tacos for lunch, and did an escape room at a shop where the owner was the game master for the day and had been building escape rooms for almost 10 years. We missed the all-time record for the 6-year-old room we did by a hair under 3 minutes, alas. We're getting good at these things -- practice makes permanent. We had an awkward/funny issue when we were crossing the bridge nearby the dinghies, headed to lunch, when we noticed the dinghies both hanging in the air by their lines. Oh, right -- tides are a thing, even on "rivers". Oops. We'll figure all this stuff out someday... Fun day in the city though -- we'd definitely come back at a later time. It's big enough that there's plenty of food/drink/activities, but small enough that it's easy to get around, even with scooters. We also pumped out and filled up with water on the dock of the Edgewood Yacht Club, where we were staying. Our watermaker is on the fritz, so every run is questionable as to whether it'll crap out. We're headed to New Bedford this week to get it serviced, since it requires some proprietary scanner tools, of course...

We headed over to a mooring field just south of Providence, RI, arriving just after noon. It was a dreary morning, and we waited for the rain to stop before heading ashore to chuck garbage and pick up packages. From there, we got dinner at another surprisingly awesome fortuitous choice, a Korean restaurant, before heading back to the boats for the night. Tomorrow should be sunnier to do a larger exploration of the city.

The 5th was a somewhat-work-day, but we ended up taking off early to go sample some local breweries, then fortuitously found an amazing Portuguese restaurant for dinner that we took copious leftovers home from. On the way back, Jax wanted to check out the carousel that's right at the edge of the mooring field. We went inside and there was no one waiting or anything, so we paid for a quick session on the carousel for just the four of us. Highly entertaining 3 minutes.

We headed over to Fall River after sleeping in, where we had a reservation on their mooring balls for the 4th of July (Thursday) through Saturday. It's a neat spot, that we've been to once before, because there's a museum of WW2 warships in the water here, and the mooring field is actually protected by the USS Massachusetts, a South Dakota-class fast-attack battleship built in the late 30s. After working all day as normal, with pretty limited waves, as night fell we were greeted by what felt like every other house around the entire lake-like river mouth launching fireworks for a couple hours. At one point, a spot on the shore burst into flames and we assumed it had to be a mistake, but after grabbing the binoculars, we figured out it was an intentional (huge) bonfire. Fun night of watching exploding things all evening.

Weather was predicted to be miserable, so we decided to get reservations for the 6 of us (us, Inquest, No Rush) to get dinner at the Vanderbilt hotel and restaurant. We got into the dinghy at about 3:40pm, and 2 minutes later the sky opened up and rained+hailed on us while we frantically threw on our rain clothes and picked up Russ/Jax to go to shore. Day in Newport ‐ Jun 29

With good weather for the day, we dinghied across the straight to park at the public dinghy dock, promptly finding that the dinghy dock had a 25hp motor limit (!?!?) and went to a park dinghy dock just around the corner. I had to make a run out to Bank of America, so I brought a scooter over and made a run ~4.5 miles out to it. They unfortunately only had one of the two things they were supposed to have been shipped, so I went back to downtown. Upon arriving at the cafe where people were wait [...]
ing, BoA called back and said the other thing just arrived, so I scooted back out, grabbed the thing, and then ubered back to downtown since the scooter ran out of battery. Good start to the day. From there, Hannah, Jax, and I had an excellent manipedi, and then we met up with Russ and friends from No Rush, the boat we cruised with last year up the Champlain area. We got a late lunch, then decided to do an impromptu escape room, which we promptly destroyed their time record on, and then went and got beer at the Rejects brewery. I developed a massive headache, then we headed back to the boats, I took a pile of medicine and slept from 8-11pm, and then coded until 5am when I got tired again. Weird but fun day, on balance.

After not doing much Monday, we went out to dinner after work to the Mexican place in town, which was pretty good (with excellent margaritas), and then dinghied back to the boat. With the rains gone and it now just being very windy, we headed ashore to make the best of our Sunday. Our plan was a brewery and grocery shopping and whatever else we ran across. As we headed to the brewery, we saw a "tea house" that looked cute to remember for later, and almost to the brewery we saw a sign for "Smith Castle", which we then turned off to investigate. It turned out to just be an older house that was decked out in period-accurate furniture and such, which was far less exciting [...]
than a castle, so we moved on to the brewery. The brewery also turned out to be disappointing -- despite having 7 IPA/APAs on tap of their 10 beers, Russ was unimpressed, and we were unimpressed with the non-PAs. We enjoyed some fried pickles, then headed over for grocery shopping. On the way back, we checked out the tea house, to find out that they're reservation-only, and have 2 seatings a day, which we had missed. We sulked off to the nearest coffee shop to get drinks and cookies instead, then headed back to the boats for the evening, with another evening storm planned (which poured like crazy for a bit).

After work, we had a reservation to do an escape room in town, which turned out to be pretty good, though we beat it pretty soundly, only needing a clue for a key that was hiding literally "in plain sight" in a crevice of a wall. After a few days in New London, we got to the Juneteenth holiday when Hannah and I are off work, and went to our primary target: the Submarine Force Library+Museum in Groton. to nearly present-day, and included a fantastic 45 minute video that really went through the history of submarine warfare -- good and bad. Strongly recommend this museum to anyone. We then headed back to the boats and cruised over to a yacht club just outside Mystic. We usually stay at the museum dock, but it's expensive, and we wanted to spend a few days here, so we ended up finding the Mason Island Yacht Club with affordable moorings, and a short 2 mile scooter ride into town. They turned out to be a great little club to stay with and we'll definitely come back. We scooted to north of downtown to go to a escape room place, which ended up going from several availabilities to totally full in the 20 minute scooter ride, so we moved on to a brewery nearby that had a bunch of great beers on tap. We rounded out the evening going into downtown and eating at an italian place that was quite tasty. After heading back to the boats for the evening, I tried to start chopping up a 5/16" thick stainless steel plate and dulled a bunch of my drill bits and cutting blades before giving up for the night, so that was fun. In the morning we headed back down the CT river, stopping at Essex to pump out and add some fresh water (which was so slow we gave up at 80% tanks). We had an uneventful crossing over to the Thames River, where we stopped at the first town -- New London. We were planning on grabbing a mooring or anchoring, but the municipal pier turned out to be free, so we docked up there. iately went out and got lunch and beer at the first place we saw, which had 50 beers on top and mediocre food. After we rolled out of there, we walked 30 mins down to Fort Trumbell, a revolutionary-era fort, and furthered our knowledge of immediately-outdated military technology. We then wandered back to the boats, and a live band was setting up literally feet from the boat. They played for hours, all kinds of fun random covers over 50+ years of music. I ended up coding for hours while being serenaded and Hannah exercised. It was a lovely end to the weekend.

This turned out to be a super-packed day. We were all planning to head back into Essex to check out the Connecticut River Museum in the morning, but in one of the every-6-hour current flips, our anchor fouled itself and our raft went for a ride headed downstream. for an hour's learning. We then headed an hour upriver to just south of Goodspeed Landing. We had two objectives today: Gillette Castle and the Goodspeed Opera House. After chilling for a bit, we dinghied down to the shore in front of the castle, where we left the dinghy on a bungee anchor and hiked up the hill to the castle. Upon arrival, we found out that unfortunately reservations are required and all tours had sold out for the day. We took some cool pictures and then wandered back to the dinghy and returned to the raft. We chilled for the afternoon on a gorgeous day, ate dinner outside in our cockpit, and eventually dressed up to dinghy over to the opera house to watch South Pacific. The play turned out to have an excellent cast, great (tiny) orchestra, and the opera house was full of old-time character and was a pretty intimate theater. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the experience greatly exceeded expectations for all. Thus concludes our CT River tour -- in the morning we head back out and then east to New London.

Hanging out around Essex ‐ Jun 14

We mostly hung out on the boats for the next couple days. Bridgerton came out with its new batch of episodes which Hannah spent most of Thursday watching repeatedly. We went into town on Friday night to hit up The Griswold Inn, an old inn and pub from the revolutionary war, which had decent food and mediocre drinks. Nothing to write home about except the lady playing Billy Joel piano adaptations all night but never finishing one song.

The entrance is a small rock-lined gap in the shoreline that immediately gets quite shallow, and you run through a narrow channel for a mile or so back into a small anchorage. AccuWeather predicted rain incorrectly, however, and it turned into a torrential downpour once I got half way to shore on the dinghy, and stayed that way all the way to getting on the train. When we got back to the boat, the generator wouldn't start so I had to debug the fuel system for a while before we could get charged back up after a day of limited solar, at which point it was time for rest and sleep.

After getting on and off temperature warnings from the boat's battery compartment for the last month, it looked like the cold snap this week was going to be a major issue, so I grabbed a last-minute plane ticket and headed up to Baltimore to try to install some new heaters. I, of course, arrive in the middle of a snowstorm -- the marina's frozen over and there's 4-6 inches of snow on the ground. I quickly learn that the heaters I bought didn't come with the required specific type of double-sid [...]
ed adhesive on them, so I ordered it from Amazon with same-day delivery, and then was lied to for 6 hours straight by Amazon reps who said it was out for delivery and almost there, and then at 10pm told me that, in fact, it hadn't shipped yet. In the end, I think I found out that the real problem was actually a bad temperature sensor in the battery bay, so I put a more-calibrated one in place (that I can remote monitor), and disabled the low-temperature cutout on the Victron equipment. So I'll monitor it by hand for the rest of the winter, and see if I need to come back up for round 2.

After putting in several days of frantic boat maintenance and winterizing work, and ending up buying a slip in Anchorage Marina, we flew down to our Key West house for the winter. Hannah still doesn't get back until later tomorrow night, so I spent part of the rest of the day starting to get the boat ready for the winter -- finishing tidying up the upstairs and sorting out window covers. The rest of the evening will be spent working on some BoatKit projects.

The morning started out crazy foggy -- like the thickest fog we've ever tried to move in, with me just mostly navigating via the chartplotter and trying to sight ATONs through the fog if they happened to come close enough on that chart that I would expect to see them. We blasted through all 12 locks of the Erie, with a brief moment of excitement as lock 4 broke for ~15 mins and they couldn't get the exit doors to open, and then the Troy lock on the Hudson, chasing the sunset to get into Donovan's well after they closed for the night. Tiring day, but we're now ahead of track for getting necessary errands done and getting Hannah to an airport for next week.

Knowing that both of our boats would be doing various service-y things this week, we planned for the long holiday weekend to be out in the Finger Lakes. We did a chartered wine tour on Saturday and then Jax organized a self-guided beer tour on Sunday. The wine was infinitely better than expected (we have not had good luck with wine made on the east coast so far), and the beer was also (mostly) great, and it was a super fun weekend with perfect weather to explore the Finger Lakes region.

We went through the last lock on the Oswego canal today, and while in the canal, I noticed a storefront with "distillery" written on it, so I called an audible and we all pulled over after the lock to check it out. After buying some whiskey, we headed back out and soon took a left to join the Erie canal, going through one more lock before filling back up with ~680 gallons of diesel at Winter Harbor ($3.79/gallon) and pumping out the holding tanks. After exchanging fluids, we pulled into a slip at Ess-Kay Yards, where the boat will stay for the next week getting the injection pumps changed out while we are in Seattle for a work trip for me. Knowing we had to make a pretty big open crossing of Lake Ontario, we looked at the weather for the next few days, and Sunday looked like decent-enough weather, especially later in the day. It was better on Tuesday, but that would have been complicated with work schedules, so we decided to risk it and headed out. And we regretted it, a bit. It smoothed out in the evening as we pulled into Oswego, but the day definitely polished our holding tanks, shaking them up for 6 hours straight. We went through the first lock (O-8) to get off the weather-affected water, and parked for the week at the free wall just south of the lock. We're aiming to get to Ess-Kay to get some work done on the boat starting the following Monday, so we have some time to chill, now that we've made it across the lake. Russ and Jax will follow on Tuesday, when the weather is nicer.

We have a week to get a few miles away down to Boldt Castle, so we decided to find a more protected anchorage for a few days, and before work we moved down to this pretty little "lake" in the center of some large islands. Despite it being a Monday, there's still boats out everywhere around us -- rafted boats, kids playing on water toys, etc. But at least people are mostly being pretty kind with wakes, given how many boats are around. This is our likely hangout spot for a few days.

Tay Canal Locks

We woke up to a dreary-looking day, got some pastries from a local bakery, and departed, locking up out of Smiths Falls. This next segment was what we would ordinarily consider very tight/windy/narrow, but the lock before us was the Kawartha Voyageur, an 110 ft long 30 ft wide cruise boat bespoke to just barely fit inside these locks, so we had to hold our pride. When we raised anchor, we pulled up a huge pile of weed that took Hannah a while to clean up, then we nestled into the lock wall at the bottom of the Tay Canal, where we'd planned to spend the afternoon in Perth (see attached blog post). After returning from Perth, I found that the alternator power cable end was starting to melt and spent the rest of the evening (and morning) rebuilding and improving that whole system, which was definitely how I wanted to spend the evening.

We went up a triple lock set at Merrickville and then went another 8 miles to and through the lock at Kilmarnock, stopping at the top side for the afternoon/night. We're aiming to get to Smith Falls tomorrow, a bigger town, where Russ will be getting a package.

Eventually the lock folks came down and started sorting out who would go first today and we got under way. that I ended up taking meetings with an earbud+mic in my right ear, and the Eartec to communicate with Hannah in my left ear. But we reasonably efficiently made our way to the top and docked the boat. Unfortunately, Inquest lost a starter motor in the second lock and needed help getting onto the wall at the top, where we then tore down the starter and found it to be totally toast. Russ will sort out a repair/replacement in the morning, and we went to a nice dinner in town where we scared away some other patrons by being too boisterous.

We had monsoons for an hour or so -- just a crazy amount of water. Inquest saw a wind gust up to 44kts at one point. Then it settled down as we ate dinner on the boats and eventually had a very calm evening overnight. This is Alex's last night on the boat -- he takes a train from Ottawa in the morning.

Montreal Aviation Museum

Started the day with Russ and I scooting/biking over to check out the Montreal Aviation Museum, which turned out to be a great little local museum full of restored old planes that were clearly labors of love. It was very focused on the early era of aviation, which I actually knew very little about, so it was quite interesting, with a special exhibit on women in early aviation plus Canada's efforts in the beginning of the aviation race. Great way to spend 90 minutes.

Took the bus into the old town area of Montreal and explored for the afternoon. Ate lots of ice cream, saw pretty buildings, drank lots of great beer. At the end of the day, it's a pretty huge and fairly modern city, and hence somewhat less exciting to us. We were glad to have gone in and explored for a day. Maybe worth a longer trip in the future at some point, with a target of going up Mont Royal and doing some of the stuff further afield.
